PORTRAIT

PORTRAIT

A portrait is a shared conversation between the subject and photographer or, after the fact, between the subject and viewer. It’s a feeling, a human connection, and a moment in time.

A portrait is a recognizable depiction of a real person in visual art like sculpture, painting, or photography. Fashions change: today, the selfie reigns supreme; depictions like those on the ceiling at Versailles are out (for now). They are different but the same: each is an idealization.

I don’t mind a bit of idealization, but I also like the real. I also want it to be fun. I’ve taken a lot of portraits over the last five years; I wondered if this would be my direction. I’m leaning more toward fine art documentary work, but portraiture still calls. I love making shapes out of light and capturing the essence (whatever that is).

I have some ideas. Each involves a studio portrait session and then me fiddling around in Photoshop for several hours. In the end, you’ll walk away with a fine art print or poster, depending on the project. I’ll roll out the ideas below, one at a time. If they are of interest to you, please reach out.
