The Taylor Building

22 North Front Street

This 1876 brick building was originally owned by Robert Taylor and called the Taylor Hotel. Downstairs was a liquor store; upstairs were three or four upscale hotel suites let to families. (Most hotels along the railroad, including in Philipsburg, let rooms only to men and traveling salesmen, also called drummers.) Robert Taylor owned a distillery out back on Laurel Street; sadly, drank himself to death.

By the 1940s, the Quality Boot Store was on the premises, as was its X-ray machine for measuring children’s feet. Times have changed.

The building cost $8,000 to build, but a lot more to renovate. The upstairs is now affordable apartments and the ground floor will be used by Moshannon Valley Heritage Center.
